More About Spring Lake

It is a well-developed residential community that maintains bathing beaches, pool facilities, tennis courts, a sparkling lake in the center of town well stocked with trout, and a quaint shopping district comprised of a variety of lovely shops and eateries. Spring Lake's hotels, inns and bed and breakfast establishments provide year-round accommodations to the thousands of tourists who visit the Borough. The boardwalk in Spring Lake has been identified as the longest, uninterrupted non-commercial boardwalk in the State of New Jersey and is used year-round by locals and visitors alike.

Town History

The Borough of Spring Lake derives its name from the fresh water spring-fed lake formerly known as "Fresh Creek Pond." Spring Lake was formed as a borough in 1892, from portions of Wall Township which were primarily the farm communities of Villa Park, Spring Lake Beach, Brighton-North Brighton, and Como. Early development occurred as a result of land subdivision and the advent of rail service to the area. In the early 1900's the town became a fashionable seaside resort boasting fine hotels, lavish estates, and pretentious private homes (known as "cottages"). It developed into a coastal resort for members of New York City and Philadelphia high society. A surviving example of architecture constructed during this era is the Martin Maloney Cottage on Morris Avenue next to the tycoon's former, though no longer existent, Ballingarry Estate.
