Town History

Mountainside Borough split from neighboring Westfield in 1895. The borough took its name from the fact that it was the side of Westfield that included the mountain. The Badgely House in Mountainside dates back to the Revolutionary War where residents concealed their valuables from the British. In 1893, the nationally renowned Children's Specialized Hospital was established. Originally it was for “unfortunate children living in tenements in nearby cities? and later grew into what it is today.
