More About Summit

Summit residents and neighbors from the surrounding communities enjoy the Summit Playhouse, the Summit Symphony and the Summit Arts Center, now known as the New Jersey Center for the Visual Arts. Summit has eleven historic districts with many of its finest architectural buildings and homes dating back to the turn of the century. As evidenced by its thriving downtown, Summits shopping district hosts an assortment of unique owner-operated businesses and recently underwent a comprehensive beautification project in 2000.

Town History

During the Revolutionary War, Summit was known as "Beacon Hill" because bonfire beacons were lit on an eastern ridge in Summit to warn the New Jersey militiamen of approaching British troops. Later, after the Civil War, Summit became a summer resort area because of its crisp, clean mountain air and convenient proximity to New York City. Summit attracted extremely wealthy people who built extensive summer estates.
