More About Bernards Township

Bernards Township is referred to by the locals as Basking Ridge because the town rests on a ridge where deer would bask in the sun. The landscape descends down to the Watchung Mountains which lie south. New York City commuters find the town conveniently because it is situated only 33 miles west of Manhattan.

Town History

On May 24, 1760 Bernards Township was granted a township charter by King George II of England, establishing Bernardston Township. This act was as a courtesy and in appreciation for the services of Sir Francis Bernard,the Royal Governor of New Jersey. Bernards Township now comprises Basking Ridge, Liberty Corner, Lyons, and West Millington.
