More About Morristown

Morristown is a great place to live, situated less than an hour away from New York City by train or car, and there is never a shortage of things to do. Offering the amenities of an urban city, Morristown has a particular suburban feeling allowing its residents and people from surrounding towns to visit frequently. At the center of Morristown is the Green, which contains a fountain and walking paths. Excellent shopping and dining destinations as well as the close proximity to New York City has kept Morristown a thrilling and desirable place to live.

Town History

Morristown was settled in 1715 by English Presbyterians from Long Island and Connecticut. The town became the seat of Morris County soon after its separation from Hunterdon County in 1739. Full of Revolutionary War history, George Washington and the Continental Army were encamped near Morristown during what has been termed, the Hard Winter of 1779-1780. Washington had selected Morristown for its strategic location, proximity to NYC, defensible terrain, important communication routes and a supportive local community. Morristown was named one of the Dozen Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and is considered the military capital of the American Revolution. Today, the National Park Service at Morristown National Historical Park preserves sites in the Morristown area occupied by the Continental Army.
