More About Mendham Township

Mendham Township is a remarkable rustic oasis outside of the bustle of the city. The United Sates Department of Education recognized Mendham Township Middle School as one of eleven schools in New Jersey for their Blue Ribbon Schools Program. The well-kept land in the Township gives this town a quaint, country-like atmosphere. Home of Pitney Farm, a great place to visit that prides itself on the beautiful gardens that surround the historic farm house.

Town History

Mendham Township was first settled by the Ralston Family in 1748 and went by the name of Ralston. Flush with natural resources, this area was sought after for its proximity to the Raritan River and abundance of lumber, iron ore and limestone. The settlers utilized limestone for building materials as well as fertilizer. Successful local industry was on the rise until after the Civil War. While other towns flourished, the Townships economy collapsed. Residents returned to their farming roots, which became the main source of economic growth as Mendhams manufacturing businesses continued to fold under the urban competition. Renowned farming families such as the Pitneys and Lorees are still well known today in Mendham Township.
