The Mendham area has a long history that dates back to the Lenni-Lenape Indians. In 1745, Ebenezer Byram gave the town the name of "Mendham" which included both Mendham Borough and Township. In 1906, Mendham Borough seceded from Mendham Township, when its residents wanted to construct a public water system.
