More About Chatham Township

Chatham Township offers residents open spaces while still maintaining a central location. There are excellent shopping facilities available locally in the Hickory Tree section and nearby in Short Hills, Summit and Madison. The Township maintains The Great Swamp Wildlife Preserve, providing an abundance of green space, while also allowing residents a short commute to New York City.

Town History

Chatham Townships population greatly increased when in 1837 the Morris and Essex Railroad brought many newcomers. In the late 1870s and 1880s Chatham Township became a center for the rose-growing industry. Years later, after the five-year construction ban during World War II, families moved to the township resulting in large farms gradually becoming luxurious home sites. Former rose farms became two major shopping centers at the corner known as Hickory Tree. In 1959 The Great Swamp was secured as a protected wilderness area after a long battle to prevent an airport from being built there, keeping Chatham Township an attractive place to live.
