More About Chatham Borough

Chatham is a quiet, carefully developed, residential community featuring many fine single homes, townhouses, garden apartments and condominiums that combined offer suburban attractiveness as well as urban accessibility. Not only is Chatham a flourishing suburban community, which was named one of the Top 10 Best Places to Live in the United States by Money Magazine in 2005, it is also conveniently located in close proximity to New York City by train or highway, an ideal residential area for commuters.

Town History

In 1773, the name Chatham was given to the colonial settlement near the shallow crossing of the Passaic in honor of William Pitt, the First Earl of Chatham, who favored the colonists in important political debates. Chatham was a part of the American Revolutionary War due to its closeness to Morristown, a resting place for colonial troops. The arrival of the Morris and Essex train line in 1837 allowed for a population increase and created the commuter population that Chatham continues to maintain.
